1995 “The Rhinoceros”
Depicted on the 1995 Natura is the rhinoceros
(rhino), one of the "Big 5" of the African bush. Both the white and
black rhinos are presented. The choice of the Rhino coincides with the
centenary of the proclamation (1895) of the Hluhluwe
and Umfolozi nature reserves. It is in the area of
these reserves where, at the end of the previous century, the only twenty white
rhinos existent in South
Africa were to be found.
The remarkable conservation programme of the Natal Parks Board led to
resurgence in the numbers of white rhinos, so much so, that more than 5000
white rhinos could be resettled from there.
The common obverse of each coin depicts the head of the rhino.
