2002 - Robben Island
R2 Gold Series
THE DESIGN
The 2002 R2 pure gold coin was the start of another
fascinating theme. WORLD HERITAGE SITES of South
Africa once again highlights the beauty and splendor of South
Africa. Robben Island,
South Africas
first cultural World Heritage Site was the theme for this 2002 coin. This coin
features an aerial view of Robben
Island with Table Mountain
in the background. On the foreground of the design, the Robben Island Museum
logo is depicted in an oval frame.
ROBBEN ISLAND
At various times between the 17th and 20th century, Robben Island was used as a prison, a hospital
for socially unacceptable groups, and a military base. Its buildings, and in
particular those built in the late 20th century (such as the maximum security
prison for political prisoners), bear witness to the triumph of democracy and
freedom over oppression and racialism.
Robben
Island also has a
thriving natural environment. It hosts more than 70 bird species, 23 species of
mammals and spectacular natural vegetation.
