Two themes,

2002 on the Protea coin
series.
2002 - World Summit on Sustainable
development
THE DESIGN
One of South Africa’s key events for 2002 - The Johannesburg World Summit - has
been selected as the theme for the 2002 Protea coin
series.
This was done to illustrate South
Africa’s significant role in the world’s
sustainable development agenda.
As in the case of its predecessors, the 2002 Protea coins consist of 1 oz (R25) and 1/10 oz (R5)
gold coins as well as a R1 silver coin. The obverse of all three coins portrays
the King Protea, South Africa’s national flower.
The main design element on the reverse of all three coins is planet earth with
the African continent clearly visible. The words “Johannesburg World Summit”
and the year “2002” also appear on the three coins. The 1 oz (R25) gold coin
shows the word “prosperity”, while the 1/10 oz (R5) coin displays the word
“planet”. The word “people” appears on the R1 silver coin. “Prosperity, Planet
and People” is the official slogan for the 2002 World Summit.
The Johannesburg World Summit is a United Nations Convention at which delegates
will review the progress made since the Earth Summit ten years ago in Rio de Janeiro. This Convention
intends to shape the future direction of a globally defined sustainable
development agenda. A shift in emphasis from purely environmental issues to the
importance of sustainable social and economic development within the context of
environmental stewardship will be the focus point for this international
convention.
The South African Mint salutes all parties involved in sustainable development,
poverty eradication, social development and environmental protection.
