The South African Mint Company launched the first official South African coins commemorating the 2010 World Cup South Africa™ in 2006.
On the reverse of both coins the official logo for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ is featured as the main design element. The stylised design of the German eagle and the Rose and the South African Secretarybird and the Protea, depicts the transfer of the FIFA World Cup™ from Germany to South Africa. The denomination “R2” completes the design.
The obverse of the R2 Gold Coin depicts the South African coat of arms and the words “South Africa”. The obverse of the R2 Sterling Silver Crown depicts the South African coat of arms with the words “South Africa” written in all the official languages. The year of issue “2006” appears on both coins.
