2010 FIFA WORLD CUP
SOUTH AFRICA 2008 COINS
R2 Gold (1/4 oz 24 carat), R1 Gold (1/10th oz
24 carat) and R2 Silver Crown (1 oz silver)
In 2005, the South African Mint was requested
to partake in a worldwide “2006 FIFA World
Cup Germany ™” coin programme, consisting
of a crown size silver coin and ¼ oz gold coin to
celebrate this event. The 2006 Soccer coin
series featured the new official South Africa
2010 FIFA World Cup™ logo and the coins were
launched at the 2006 World Cup in Germany in
July 2006.
In 2007, the Soccer Coin Series had a R1 gold
(1/10th 24 ct) coin added to the set, which
depicted National Symbols as well as elements
from the new South African Coat of Arms.
A programme has been implemented from
2008 until 2010 to depict each Province which
will be involved in hosting the World Cup
Games. Elements from the coat-of-arms of
each Province will feature on these coins.
The 2008 Soccer Series will reflect symbols from
the Provinces of Mpumalanga and Kwazulu
Natal on both the R2 (1/4 oz) gold
commemorative coin and the R2 sterling silver
Crown. The Real Yellowood tree, which is South
Africa's National tree, and the bushmen figures
derived from the Linton Panel (rock-art of the
Drakensberg) and depicted as part of the South
African coat-of-arms, are shown on the R1
(1/10th oz) gold commemorative coin.
